PROGRAM PHILOSOPHY:
To provide an educational preschool program for children ages 2-1/2 to 5 years old, and to provide a safe, nurturing and healthy environment for young children to include infants, toddlers, preschoolers and school-aged children. We believe in addressing every aspect of the "Whole Child" to stimulate the cognitive, social and physical development of young children and to guide them through the various social, emotional, behavioral, physical and intellectual developmental stages by allowing them choices and opportunities. We value and promote the idea of giving children opportunities to explore through decision-making with child initiated activities and also free-play, but with teacher-directed supervision and guidance. We promote a hands-on approach when teaching children in our care. To develop and maintain relationships with the children in our care and to establish a teacher-parent relationship with the parents of the children in our care by communicating with parents about their child(ren), listening to what parents have to say about their children, and providing parents with useful information regarding upcoming events occurring at our facility for the children and in our community for young children in general.
DAYCARE/PRESCHOOL BREIFING:
We offer a family child care environment where children can feel more at home as they develop a
nd learn. We are licensed by the State of California to provide child care services, License #
334819829 and on the Trustline Registry as well. Our structured environment lets the children
make choices on the activities they would like to do. Every morning, children participate in circle time to discuss the various events, such as:
-
weather,
- calendar,
- or events going-on in their neighborhood, here in our facility or at home.
Children enrolled in Tot Spot Daycare and Preschool will be involved in listening to stories, creating their own stories, singing songs, learning about letters, numbers, shapes and colors, creating finger plays and puppet shows, and learning about creative dance and dramatic play, and
exploring other fun and developmentally appropriate types of activities. The children will spend time outside (when weather permits) exploring and playing. We will bring our indoor activities outside with a blend of outdoor activites such as gardening activities, block building activities, sand and water table activities, riding tricycles or using other outdoor play equipment. The television will be seldom used, with the exception of the morning check-in/sign-in and evening check-out/sign-out timeframes. However, there will be times when the television will be
needed to allow children to view curricula related educational programs.
NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND (NCLB)
In our effort to support NCLB, children enrolled in the Preschool Program at Tot Spot Daycare and Preschool will be involved in various academic curricula and play. Due to the fact that we are a private facility, we are not mandated by the same regulations in which California State preschools are but in our effort to ensure that we meet specific preschool objectives, we will also implement the Desired Results Developmental Profile-Revised (DRDP-R) assessment system. By so doing, we should accomplish more than ensuring that Tot Spot Daycare and Preschool complies with the same guidelines that California State Preschools are required to comply with, regarding the DRDP assessment tool but we will also be able to utilize the observation and assessment skills we acquired in college to assist us in our teaching profession. Additionally, we intend to utilize the Early Childhood Environment Rating Scale-Revised (ECERS-R) beginning in the academic school year 2009-2010. According to the California Department of Education, our compliance with the DRDP assessment system, and using child-initiated/teacher-directed activities to meet specific program objectives will help:
-
to better monitor and understand children's program*
-
to tailor interventions to the individual needs of each child*
-
to assist in informing families about their children's progress*
-
in using data collected to contribute to program evaluation and continual quality improvement efforts, assisting in decision-making at the child, program, and policy levels*
-
by participating in the DRDP assessment system, California's preschool special educators will be better able to document the positive results of their programs and services*
