This post is a little late, but we had fun creating Patriotic wind socks so maybe next year someone else may want to give this activity a try with a group of children. Various age kids helped to create these wind socks ranging from 3 to 8 years old. [3 year olds may have difficulty with scissors and glue so provide assistance where needed.]
Patriotic Wind Sock Craft
Materials Needed:
A Cylindrical Oatmeal Box
Construction Paper (blue and white)
String
Crepe Paper (To make red and white streamers)
Glue
Scissors
Hole Punch
Procedures:
Help the children cut the bottom of the cylindrical oatmeal box. Help the children cover the box with blue construction paper. Help the children to cut stars using the white construction paper and scissors. Help the children glue the stars onto the blue construction paper. Then, help the children cut some red and white crepe paper into streamers and glue or staple onto one end of the oatmeal box or wind sock. Punch four holes along the top of the wind sock. Then, help the children to cut two pieces of strings about one foot long. Tie the strings to the wind sock (tie the opposite ends of a string to holes on opposite sides of the cylinder). Tie a longer piece of string to the smaller pieces; this is the piece of string that the children will hang the wind sock from. You can help the children hang the patriotic wind sock from your window or porch.
