I had applied for a grant from First 5 and was denied - but so what -- someone has to be denied -- these types of decisions occur all the time, especially to the unknowns and KNOW NOTS. But a part of me always wondered if there is ever favoritism involved where the selected ONES, pick and choose wihch agencies get funded because just maybe their friends-family members are employed at these facilities/agencies. After all, isn't it also possible that they may be putting others in particular jobs, lining them up for incomes and grants, in order to sustain family members and friends economically, and perpetually?

I happen to have stumbled upon this article the other day and just thought I'd share it with anyone else who may be interested in other possibilities that can occur when large sums of [OUR-TAX DOLLARS] money are being distributed to agencies in Riverside County. Just maybe, we can all keep a watch on who gets funded and who does not - ONLY IF INTEReSTED.

I never got a grant from them either. They sent me a invitation to come to one of their grant writing sessions. Thanks for sharing.

BTW, has anyone you know or anyone on this forum ever got a grant from First 5 Riverside?

Yes I do know some of them. They are very active in the Riverside County as Child Care Providers and Leaders.

Interesting. I didn't know i had to get to know the staff in friendly talk at Riverside First 5,. The application only said something about being in business for at least two years and made mention about the grant money had be used for my continued childcare operating business. I get it, the article posted is true. I don't think Im that new of a provider in this area, and I'm already a member of Riverside County Family CC (RCFCCA) for about two years now. I can see if I can make time to get to know the decision making staff at First 5. Then, me will apply for our TOBACCO TAX MONEY GRANT again. Thanks for letting me know what to do!

Yah, I understand. I wrote a very good grant proposal but was not chosen. I'm hoping that this time around it will change. They will have another one so keep checking. Wink

Listed below is an article that preceeded the article I posted earlier regarding Riverside First 5 and our tax dollars. Here is a link to the article:

http://www.pe.com/localnews/inland/stories/PE_News_Local_S_firstfive18.387c2df.html

As you read, note how they are talking about millions or six figure funding amounts while we take time from our jobs and paying out wages to hire assistance to go their meetings on how to get funded, how to write grants, and then pay for grant writing courses and write proposals asking for just a mere 4 to 5 figure assistance fund to enhance our facilities for our kids in care.

There is something wrong with this picture? How can we select judges who are responsible and who do not have inner-County interests with other business entities or employees that affect their judgment regarding large funds that just so happen to be OUR own tax dollars?

Hi Calgirl,

Thanks for your posts. There appears to be quite a bit of controversy regarding Riverside First 5. They are making some changes - supposedly.

Well, Riverside First 5 had a couple of grants available recently. I am interested to find out if anyone I know gets anything. I applied, but I do not actually think I will get anything but decided to try anyway. I know that if I don't apply at all, I definitely will not get a dime. I also would like them to specifically tell me why I am being denied. But I doubt that will happen either and I never got a chance to get friendly with the prominent First 5 staff. If any of you applied, I wish you the best - you're going to need it!
